Dear friend,

Did you know?
We meet individuals daily who are someone's mother, grandmother or niece.
We meet people who are survivors of grave illnesses and have beaten the odds while tutoring with us.
We meet people who are sad and ashamed over their inability to pick up a newspaper and read about the daily weather.
We meet individuals who are only too eager or happy to help someone learn how to read.
We meet people who embrace us because we are here.
We meet people who quietly wipe a tear or blow their nose as they let years of frustration and self-defeat spill out for the first time.
We see the coming and the going.
With the going, we witness the first hints of dignity and a self-assured strut as they leave.

Did you know we see amazing volunteers and students every day at the Literacy Council?

May a good READ find its way into your lap,
Susan

Saying Farewell to a Loved Educator and Leader

Dr. Raymond Bauer
1946-2009

The Literacy Council family was saddened to learn of Dr. Bauer's passing on Saturday evening, August 29th.  We extend our heart-felt sorrow to his family, friends, educators and students who comprised his extended family tree.  Dr. Bauer was an exemplary role model for young and old alike.  There have been many wonderful stories told and written about Dr. Bauer - testimony to how he touched thousands of lives. Whenever I happened to run into Dr. Bauer, he greeted me with a warm hug and bubbly enthusiasm - and always, always asked about the adult students at the Literacy Council.  Dr. Bauer demonstrated deep compassion for the success of others.  He also would give me so much encouragement for our agency's mission. We will hold his spirit and zest for education in high regard... and we will miss him.

Tutor and Student Spotlight

The Literacy Council is home to many "out of the ordinary' individuals.  As time has passed by some students and tutors have shared inspiring tid bits about themselves.  Listen and be inspired.

Did you know:  One tutor has 17 exotic birds living with her?   Some talk, some squawk, some perch and some will actually give her a kiss.... and all are beautifully outfitted in vibrant feather coats.

Did you know:  Eight seasoned students over the age of 65 are learning to be fluent readers?  They argue that their tutor is the best of the best!

Did you know:  One student, whose only transportation was a bicycle, now has a driver's license? His first car is a well-loved jalopy... but it runs.  He will tell you that great things happen when you learn how to read.

Did you know:  One student has had 5 of his stories published in a writer's contest?  We can lend you the two books that feature his stories and poems.

Did you know:  Fourteen tutors have been with the Literacy Council for over 7 years?

Did you know:  20% of Literacy Council tutors also volunteer for other not-for-profit agencies and charities?

Did you know:  the fee for getting tutored at the Literacy Council is merely the student's commitment to begin? Tutoring services are free.

Now you Know!
