Dear friend,
My nieces are getting excited about
Halloween. They have important decisions to make.
"What will I be for Trick or Treat?" The two girls
are good readers and over the years, I have watched them
become even better readers. When I spend time with
them on Thursday evenings each reads a book for about 20
minutes in the evening. Sometimes, I discover them
fast asleep under their covers, books wide open and
flashlights still glowing. Since becoming a part
of the Literacy Council family I have come to revere the
enormity of being able to read the written
word. I meet adults nearly every day who are
striving towards the luxury and the wonder of traveling
to some far off place through just a turn of the
page. Maybe every new adult reader should own a
flashlight?
May a good READ find its way into your
lap,
Susan

Thank
You Karen for Your Dozen Years of
Service
 Karen Scherra joined the Literacy
Council Board of Directors in 1997. After twelve
years of continuous service to the agency, Karen has
stepped down from her volunteer position. Her
decision did not come easily. Karen has been
juggling with a very demanding schedule for a long, long
time. She has been an amazing magician, dividing
her time and talents so comprehensively. Karen is
the Executive Director of Clermont County Mental Health
and Recovery Board on Wasserman Way in Batavia. It
is a post she inherited after the death of predecessor
James Wasserman. One of Karen's passions is the
Clermont County League of Women Voters (LWV). She
is an active member and presently serves as the LWV
Historian. In her resignation letter Karen
wrote, "I certainly would offer my assistance anytime it
might be helpful - the mission of the agency (Literacy
Council) is as necessary now as it ever was."
Susan Vilardo, Executive Director of LCCBC expressed
appreciation for Karen's willingness to roll up her
sleeves with our fundraising events. Susan shared
that Karen offered guidance and wisdom to her when she
first started her directorship with the council.
Thank you, thank you Karen Scherra for every
minute you gave to the cause of teaching adults how to
read. We say farewell knowing that our
paths will cross often. (Karen Scherra photo taken by

ABLE
to the Rescue
This is a time when most companies and agencies are
facing some difficult economic challenges. The
Literacy Council is no exception. Recently, we
were given a special gift from our partner of many
years, ABLE - Adult Basic Literacy Education. Even
though ABLE has suffered a large funding loss of their
own, the Literacy Council received the fabulous news
that we would be receiving $4,500.00 from ABLE funds.
This was unexpected and welcomed news! The
Literacy Council extends heart-felt appreciation to
Jimmi McIntosh, ABLE Director AND member of LCCBC Board
of Directors. When Jimmi telephoned and asked,
"Could the agency put $4,500 dollars to good use?"
I think our hollering over the phone has caused her
permanent hearing loss. A Literacy Buzz salute to
the ABLE family for their thoughtfulness and long, long
support of helping us give struggling adults the gift of
reading and writing. |
MMTCC
Raises Money for Literacy
On Monday, October 12th, the Literacy Council will
become a little greener. We have been selected to
receive a percentage of the proceeds from the Milford
Miami Township Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing
(MMTCC.) Several years ago the chamber board
approached the council and invited us to become their
benefit partner agency for this outing. Good gifts
come in many packages and we are pleased to accept the
proceeds - golf balls, tees and all. The Literacy
Council is extremely honored to team up with MMTCC for
this event. It is fun day for staff and
volunteers. Area businesses and organizations
donate a variety of items, gift certificates and themed
baskets for the raffle prizes. Dinner is provided
by Texas Roadhouse which is a welcome feast after 18
holes of competitive golf. Prizes are awarded to
top teams and individual players. The Literacy
Council extends a HUGE thank you to the MMTCC.
Best of luck golfers. See you at the shot gun
start on Monday. |

Looking
for Tutor Trainers!
Do you enjoy speaking in front of small, intimate
groups? Has anyone ever complimented your
presentation skills? If you answered yes, then you
sound like a great candidate for LCCBC's Tutor Training
Team. Two or three times per year new volunteers
are recruited as tutors. Once trained, they are
matched with an adult student for one-on-one reading and
writing instruction. The 12-hour training sessions
take place over three 4-hour consecutive
Saturdays. The Literacy Council has a small core
of dedicated tutor trainers and we are seeking to add
several more instructors to the team. The training
series is based on a train-the-trainer model. Our
seasoned trainers have been heard to say that the
experience is very fulfilling. Plus, you get to be
the BIG CHEESE on the days that you train!
Questions? Can't wait to volunteer? Please
contact Rose Tepe - Tutor Training Chair,
513-770-4256. Rose will be happy to talk further
with you.

Tools
for Tutors
"The student and tutor each
keep a simple journal. Decorate the cover.
Write in it at least once a day - a short sentence is
perfectly fine. Personalize the journal with cut
out pictures from magazines, newspapers, photographs or
greeting cards. Watch a story unfold as tutor and
student share their work by reading aloud to one
another."

for the retention of students in adult basic and
literacy education programs.
