Thanks
Dear friend,

During February we celebrate the month of hearts, flowers, chocolate and amour!  The heart  symbol has special meaning for the Literacy Council.  You will often hear us say, "Tutors are the heartbeat of our agency and students are the very heart of what we do."  While I try to remain from playing cupid, I do have a heart-felt request.  If you happen upon one of our hardworking and dedicated tutor/student teams, give them your widest smile.  Applause for their dedication.  A HEART-FILLED salute to the  and -beat of the Literacy Council.

May the wonder of READING always be yours,
Susan

Praise to our
Volunteers and Students

Our vision is not complex... we wish to honor those individuals who volunteer to become tutors as the heartbeat of our agency; and applaud those individuals who voluntarily come forward and tell us their stories.  They are the heart of the Literacy Council...one cannot function without the other...

If you treat an individual ... as if he were what he ought to be, and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Tutor Spotlight
Dr. Gary Clemens
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Gary Clemens, Pet Talk host on 55 WKRC AM Radio.
Catch his show on Sundays from 4-6 p.m.

Dr. Clemens wears many hats.  He runs the Milford Animal Hospital, gives people advice over the radio and is a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council of Clermont and Brown Counties, AND that is not even a complete list of his professional and free-time activities!  This busy man has managed to carve quality time for both mankind and the creatures of the earth.

Eight years ago, almost through divine intervention, Dr. Clemens became involved with The Literacy Council.  A man by the name of William had brought a puppy he had found into Dr. Clemens' animal hospital.  While there, Dr. Clemens began to notice that William was having some difficulties reading.  Exercising great sensitivity, Dr. Clemens approached William and asked, "William would you like me to help you learn how to read?"  William responded eagerly, "God is with me today."  William admitted that he could only identify up to the letter "L" in the alphabet.

Dr. Clemens realized for as much as he wanted to assist William he was not confident about his own teaching skills as a tutor.  He wondered where to begin.  That is when Dr. Clemens learned about the Literacy Council's 12-hour volunteer Tutor Training classes.  The classes bolstered Dr. Clemens' confidence.  He learned how to write lesson plans for William and he learned that tutoring someone involves a lot of "trial and error."

Dr. Clemens encourages and advises others, if you have the time, to consider becoming a volunteer tutor with the Literacy Council.  "In the time that it takes to watch TV or read a book, you could be teaching someone how to read."

Dr. Clemens has a goal for himself - to be there for William for as long as he is able.  Dr. Clemens smiles softly as he says, "what you give of yourself to others lives long after you are gone."

Dr. Gary Clemens, the Literacy Council applauds your efforts and thanks you for the endless hours you have given to student, William.

Tools for Tutors

"Have the student list how many new ways the ability to read, write or spell is being used in his/her life.  Write this down in a notebook and add new "discoveries" to it each week.  Make sure the student reads the list to you aloud."

This month's tip is brought to you by a Literacy Council Tutor.
