Joy Brown, Student/Tutor Liaison
Joy O. Brown was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1944. A graduate of Indian Hill High School in
suburban Cincinnati, she attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas where she earned in a
24-month accelerated program a Bachelor of Arts degree with a minor in education. She later
attended Southern Ohio College, studying real estate; she received her license and worked in the
field part time for six years.
Currently employed as Student/Tutor Liaison at The Literacy Council, she assesses prospective
student as to their level of literacy and matches them with appropriate tutors. She is also
active in planning and implementing significant portions of the fundraising programs of The
Literacy Council. Between 1979 and 2002 she worked in sales and marketing with Absorbco, a
textile manufacturer, and Gibson Greeting Card Co., where she managed small accounts.
Joy has been married to her husband Tom for 29 years; she has seven children and 27 grandchildren.
Currently she is a liturgist at the church she attends. During her children’s early years, she
was active in numerous community activities that contributed to their education and recreation.
She enjoys reading, gardening, fishing and interacting with the grandchildren.
